There are several types of pistol best suited to Iron Plate Speed Shooting and Practical Pistol.. chosen primarily for their quality of build, reliability, design, accuracy and ease of use.. Some are chosen just because they look, and feel good to handle. Some of the most popular are shown here.. The Colt 1911, Walther CP88, Smith & Wesson 586 revolver and the Beretta 92FS, all these pistols are single or double action semi-automatics with 8 or 10 round magazines.

Then we have the more specialist 'Race guns' which are specifically designed for speed shooting, most of these use coated lead BB's (steel is not permitted due to high risk of rebound) and have much larger capacity magazines of around 18 to 20+ rounds capacity. The pictures opposite show some of the most popular of these.. the Tanfoglio Custom, the Brazo, the ASG, the Sig Sauer P226 and Umarex models. There are 3 classes.. 'Standard' (iron sights), 'Open' (any optics.. red dots etc.) and 'Laser' and they all may be used from either a holstered start or 'Tyro' (no holster - gun held in ready position pointing down at approx.45deg to target in front of the shooter).
